Elizabeth Laird

Tuesday 9th December 2014

7:30pm, National Theatre, Upper Ground, South Bank, London SE1 9PX - all welcome

The Society's book club will discuss Elizabeth Laird's The Lure of the Honey Bird: The Storytellers of Ethiopia. Elizabeth Laird is a well-known author of fiction for children and young adults. She first went to Ethiopia in 1967 to take up a teaching post in Addis Ababa and thirty years later, in the late 1990s, the British Council in Addis Ababa invited her to collect folk stories from every region of the country.

The Lure of the Honey Bird, intended for an adult readership, is a remarkable account of the journeys she made and the people she met - farmers, teachers, camel traders, cloth merchants, Orthodox clergy, men and women of a huge variety of cultures and languages - and is interwoven with a treasure trove of the stories themselves.

The Lure of the Honey Bird is available in paperback (ISBN 978-1846972461) and in Kindle formats.

We will meet in The Long Bar on the ground floor of the National Theatre.
