The Anglo-Ethiopian Society
Dance - Destino at the Stage@Leeds, Leeds
From Friday 3rd April 2009 to Saturday 4th April 2009
Destino features two new commissions from choreographers Hofesh Shechter and Russell Maliphant with Adam Benjamin, and introduces Junaid Jemal Sendi and Addisu Demissie: two young Ethiopian dancers whose lives have been transformed by dance, taking them from the streets of Addis Ababa to star in three performances on the main stage of Sadler's Wells and a tour of cities in the UK.
Completing the performance is a third piece, an inspirational new work choreographed by Tara-Jane Herbert and Susannah Broughton for a company of 120 performers.
In 2003 the Society was given a lecture about the work of the Ethiopian Gemini Trust in Addis Ababa, including details of Adugna, a community dance company for young people. The talk was entitled Gemini's street-children grow wings. Gemini is now starting its 25th year and the "Destino" project provides a chance for their two best dancers, Junaid and Addisu, to join with some of the top contemporary dancers in the UK. A page has been set up on the www.justgiving.com website for donations to support the project.
Background information on Gemini can be found on www.geminitrust.org, and information on its partner, Dance United, on www.dance-united.com
