Charity Event - The Jewish Vegetarian Society hosts Meketa

Sunday 23rd August 2015

The Jewish Vegetarian Society are holding a very special event with Meketa on Sunday 23rd August, 1pm - 4pm, 163 Brondesbury Park, London NW2 5JN (Willesden Green).

Meketa, which means 'support' in Amharic, is a UK-based organisation that assists families of Jewish origin in Gondar, Ethiopia. Many of these families gave up their livelihood in distant villages to come to Gondar and register for emigration to Israel. However, many wait years for permission to emigrate and in the meantime, they are living in extreme poverty and with little prospect of improvement in their circumstances. Meketa want to give them the ability to support themselves and their families with dignity.

Meketa will be hosting a traditional coffee making ceremony, providing a traditional vegan Ethiopian meal and providing information about the Ethiopian Jewish community in Gondar. How have their lives changed since the massive immigration to Israel of the 1990s? What challenges do they face today? There will be Ethiopian craft activities for children (and adults!) All proceeds go to Meketa's work in Ethiopia!

This is a family friendly event - if the weather is nice it will be held outdoors.

Tickets for the meal are only £10 + booking fee - with all the proceeds going to support the work of Meketa.

Tickets should be purchased in advance from Eventbrite.
