H.E. Mr Fesseha Shawel Gebre

Tuesday 26th November 2019

13:00 – 15:00, Room 4429, Main Building, SOAS, Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, London, WC1H 0XG

Ethiopia's role as a regional leader with a growing commitment to peace and security has recently been given the highest recognition, with the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. In addition to negotiating rapprochement with Eritrea, ending decades of animosity and tension between the two countries, Ethiopia has played a leading role in mediating between Sudan's Transitional Military Council and the Alliance for Freedom and Change in Sudan.

In this talk, H.E. Mr Fesseha Shawel Gebre, Ambassador of Ethiopia in the UK, will discuss Ethiopia's current foreign policy priorities, and share his reflections on the country's strategic position in the Horn of Africa. Prior to his appointment to London, Ambassador Fesseha also served as Ethiopia's Ambassador to South Sudan. The talk will reflect on his experience as a diplomat in the Ethiopian missions in Juba, Nairobi, Mogadishu, and Cairo.

H.E. Mr Fesseha Shawel Gebre assumed his post in London in February 2019. He joined the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1990 and as a career diplomat has served at Diplomatic Missions to the Republic of South Sudan in Juba (Ambassador, 2015-18), in Nairobi, Kenya (Deputy Head of Mission, 2010-14), Mogadishu, Somalia (Charge d'Affairs, 2005-08) and in Cairo, Egypt (1995-2001). In between he was assigned to various posts within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including as Deputy Chief of Cabinet, Chief Advisor on the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development and the Deputy Head of the Somalia Office. Fesseha Shawel Gebre holds an MA in International Conflict Management from the University of Nairobi in Kenya (2013) and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and International Relations from Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia (1988).
