Kristin Hjellegjerde
From Friday 14th February 2020 to Saturday 14th March 2020
The Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery at 2 Melior Place, London, SE1 3SZ, is holding an exhibition of paintings by Dawit Abebe. Open to the public 11:00 – 18:00, Tuesday to Saturday. Entrance Free.
Dawit Abebe, born in 1978, graduated from the Alle School of Fine Art and Design at Addis Ababa University with a diploma in painting, sculpture, graphics, photography and industrial design. His paintings rely on vibrant, lively colors which at times contradict the dark subject matter. He has stated that the purpose of his works are to interpret contemporary concerns of the environment, such as high-tech urbanisation and the idea of "progress." In 2001, he founded the Habesha Art Studio in his native Ethiopia, where he continues to be a full-time artist-in-residence. In addition to numerous successful international exhibitions across Africa, Europe and the Middle East, Abebe has also worked with charities such as UNICEF to hold workshops for street children in Arba Minch, Jinka and Addis Ababa. In 2017 he was named "Chevalier of Frances Order of Arts and Letters".
