19:30, Bernie Grant Arts Centre, Town Hall Approach Road, Tottenham Green, London, N15 4RX - Tickets £7 + booking fee

Uncover tales of Ethiopia's women soldiers in this discussion of new novel The Shadow King.

Join author and Fulbright Scholar Maaza Mengiste, as she reads extracts from her new book The Shadow King, followed by an interview and audience Q&A chaired by Hannah Azieb Pool.

The Shadow King is set in Ethiopia in 1935 with the impending invasion of Mussolini's army. The novel is a captivating exploration of female power, and what it means to be a woman at war, casting light on the female soldiers written out of European and African history.

Mengiste's debut novel, Beneath the Lion's Gaze, was selected by The Guardian as one of the 10 best contemporary African books. Her work can be found in The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, Granta, The Guardian, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and BBC, among other places.

'The Shadow King is a beautiful and devastating work; of women holding together a world ripping itself apart. They will slip into your dreams and overtake your memories' (Marlon James)

'A brilliant novel, lyrically lifting history towards myth. It's also compulsively readable. I devoured it in two days' (Salman Rushdie)
