Lecture - The Craft of Ethiopian Manuscripts

Sean Winslow

Tuesday 4th September 2018

7:00pm, Khalili Lecture Theatre, Main Building, SOAS, Russell Square, London WC1H 0XG - Public lecture (all welcome)

Ethiopia's scribes have been making manuscripts since Late Antiquity, and the practice is still alive, though rarer, today. Dr Sean Winslow (Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz) will introduce the Ethiopian scribal tradition, its history and current practice, illustrated with photographs and video from his fieldwork, interviewing scribes and others involved in book production and trade.

A number of contemporary Ethiopian manuscripts, along with tools used in making the books, will be on display and available for inspection.

Capacity at the venue is limited, so please reserve your place soon to avoid disappointment.
